AJL enjoyed a very special Sheirut Leumi program. Sheirut Leumi is a volunteer organization in Israel comprised of girls from Orthodox families who opt for two years of volunteer National Service in lieu of joining the army. In 1995, the idea of inviting two Sheirut Leumi girls (banot) to serve their second year of service here in Pittsburgh originated with the JEI. The program has been highly successful and is now replicated throughout the United States and abroad.
Since not every student can go to Israel, the spirit of Israel is brought to Pittsburgh through formal and informal programming at Community Day, Hillel Academy, Bnei Akiva, J-SITE, at area synagogue Religious Schools, and at Hillel Jewish University Center.
After 15 years of being based at AJL and its predecessor, the Jewish Education Institute, the Sheirut Leumi program will now be based at Hillel Academy. AJL will continue to serve as a liaison between the Banot and the synagogue Religious Schools, and provide advice and guidance to the program.
