AJL enjoys a very special Sheirut Leumi program. Sheirut Leumi is a volunteer organization in Israel comprised of girls from Orthodox families who opt for two years of volunteer National Service in lieu of joining the army.
In 1995, the idea of inviting two Sheirut Leumi girls (banot) to serve their second year of service here in Pittsburgh originated with the JEI. The program has been highly successful and is now replicated throughout the United States and abroad.
Since not every student can go to Israel, the spirit of Israel is brought to Pittsburgh through formal and informal programming at Community Day, Hillel Academy, Yeshiva Girls' School, J-SITE and through on-going community programs.
The banot have been enthusiastically accepted and have had a tremendous impact on Pittsburgh's Jewish youth.
